Dont Panic - Dont Get Angry - Rationalise!

IS YOUR POTENTIAL HAIR LOSS CAUSING EXCESSIVE PARANOIA?

Most men go bald.  That is the bald fact.  (sorry about that)
Usually it is as age advances, hair recedes.  If you have premature thinning you can do something about it to make yourself feel better.  You can spend thousands on treatment and this means you are at least taking action.  This treatment can usually slow down the loss and over time you will accept that you will go bald. And anyway, its widely known that bald men are sexier!

We dont make light of it.  Hair loss is a common problem and possibly you are one of those who are quite deeply disturbed about the rate at which you are shedding your hair. Premature hair loss can be a matter of amusement for others and a very serious cause of concern for the one affected. It not only affects the head but also adversely affects one's self image, which could be really perilous for one's life, career and happiness.

This, for sure, is not a good news for anyone. There is one simple way of dealing with it, which many of us opt for, quite unwisely by ignoring the problem. Well, ignoring doesn't help because every month when you look into the mirror, you'll find fewer hair on your head. You will notice receding hairline. This will depress you every time more than the last time. Therefore, the sooner you take note of it and act to do something about it, the better for the quality and quantity of your hair.

The first few things that you can begin with are:

  1. Determine the cause of your falling hair. A hair specialist is the best person to approach in this regard.
  2. Find out what is your hair loss pattern. Meaning, what kind of hair loss you are suffering from. Do you have bald patches or your hair are thinning uniformly all over. These are important questions, which can lead to the true cause of your hair loss. And once the cause is known, the remedy follows.
  3. Then comes the question of treatment options. There are a number of treatments available but not all of them suit everyone. So, you need to go for the one that suits you in particular. Do not experiment too much because excessive experimentation may accelerate hair loss.
  4. Keep in mind that hair loss miracles do not take place. There are no magic wands out there. The process can be slow but may work not just to retain your hair but also to get back the new ones in place of the ones you lost.

Approach the experts in the area for the best possible advice. Friends may tell you what worked with them but before you go for it, do consult an expert because the cause of your hair loss may be entirely different from that of your friend.

In case of premature hair loss one must be extra cautious while selecting a cure because one significant factor for hair loss is ruled out- advanced age. This means the cause of your hair loss may be environmental or nutritional, in which case it would be far easier to reverse the damage.

What Causes Baldness?

Forget about the old wives tales and superstitions including that it is caused by wearing too tight trousers or  hats or inherited from  your mothers father

The most common form of hair loss is known as androgenic alopecia, which consists of a gradual thinning of the hair, which eventually leads to hair loss. The most extreme form is alopecia universalis where there is total hair loss all over the body. Hair loss is a natural side effect of old age but some men can experience hair loss as early on as during the onset of puberty.

The actual causes for hair loss are varied- exposure to chemicals poisons and treatments such as chemotherapy are known to lead to hair loss. Another factor is undue stress, emotional or otherwise, trauma and depression. Certain illnesses also induce hair loss as a symptom. Tumors and various kinds of outgrowths of the skin have also resulted in hair loss. Another very important cause is an unhealthy diet and lifestyle. It has been proven that a sedentary way of life coupled with a diet that is high in fat and calorie intake more often than not results in early hair loss.

Perhaps due to the fact that hair loss is such a common problem, there are a number of remedies that have been on the market for years that help in dealing with hair loss. There is also much research being done using stem cell research and cloning in order to induce hair multiplication. This however it still in its testing stages but does prove that many advancements are being made today in the field of treating hair loss.

ARE YOU READY TO GO BALD YET?

The Latest Info on Baldness Treatment

25-year-old Luke, who co-owns a construction business with his father in Michigan, guessed it might happen to him one day given his family history--just not at the age of 20.

Turowski tried shaving his head for a couple of years. But he didn't like the idea of wearing the look in his wedding pictures some day. When he finally let his locks grow again, he decided to do something.

"To me, going bald is aging," he says.

Whether it's a matter of wanting to look young, feel confident or simply have a woman run her fingers through it, many men will go to great lengths to avoid losing their hair.

In a survey of 2,338 men by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, more than 1,300 said they'd be willing to give up a personal possession in exchange for more hair. Of that group, 26% said they'd be willing to give up a stereo system, 21% a cellphone, 17% a laptop and 13% a plasma TV.

It's estimated that the U.S. market for hair restoration procedures in 2004 was about $811 million, the vast majority of which was for male patients, according to the ISHRS.

Dr. Jeffrey Epstein, of the Foundation for Hair Restoration, says men unhappy with their receding hair lines basically have two options. They can shave their heads, a la Bruce Willis--a style that makes a statement but takes guts. Or they can seek treatment.

"People that lose their hair are viewed as less powerful and more suspicious," says Epstein, who has surgical and consultation offices in South Florida and New York. "It's also seen as a measure of virility."

The First Step
While androgenetic alopecia, a genetically determined condition that spurs balding, affects roughly 50% of men internationally, it's not the only cause. Before you start trolling the Internet for quick fixes, head to the dermatologist's office to rule out underlying medical problems, suggests Dr. Gene Rubinstein, a clinical instructor at UCLA, who is in private practice at the Dermatology and Laser Centre of Studio City, Calif.

A dermatologist can help you figure out if medications, such as menoxidil, aka Rogaine, or prescription-only propecia, are smart choices. The only two drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating hair loss, both have been shown as effective in preventing hair loss for as long as they're used and can be taken simultaneously for potentially better results. They can also promote regrowth of hair, albeit typically thin hair, Rubinstein says.

Earlier this year, the FDA also gave clearance to a handheld home medical device called the HairMax LaserComb, which uses a laser's energy to promote hair regrowth. It sells for $395 to $545.

But since men may not want to take a pill every day for the rest of their lives or regularly use a comb, many turn to hair transplantation, says London and New York-based plastic surgeon Dr. Laurence Kirwan.

Top Techniques

Follicular unit grafting is considered the gold standard in hair transplantation techniques, according to Epstein. While a decade ago doctors took large grafts of hair--known as plugs--from the back of a patient's head and transplanted them to the crown, follicular unit grafting takes hairs in groups of one to four. Procedures may take several hours and cost upwards of $10,000. But patients end up with smaller donor site scars and, more important, doctors can recreate a permanent, natural-looking hair line.

Turowski has had two of the grafting procedures, giving him a look he says makes him feel "more approachable."

As for upcoming advances, one technique doctors have high hopes for in the future is hair cloning. Currently being researched by a handful of companies, the process is many years from hitting the market. Bosley is looking to make it work by extracting cells from the areas of a man's head that resist balding, putting them in a lab dish and multiplying them by the thousands. The hope is that once the new cells are injected back into the scalp, they'll work with skin cells to form new follicles, says Dr. Ken Washenik, medical director of Bosley. Unlike with transplants, the patient could end up with more hairs overall.

Don't Buy The Snake Oil
If you're confused about what to do and looking for unbiased information, consider the
Hair Foundation. A new independent, nonprofit group, it presents facts about hair care, hair loss and hair replacement techniques.

"There are so many plain old false claims," says Dr. Tony Mangubat, the foundation's current president and founder of Seattle's Southcenter Cosmetic Surgery and Hair Restoration. "The history of this is life-long. We wanted to set up a method to cut through myths and get to the truth."

While men have options when it comes to treatments, they don't always work for everyone and some, Rubinstein says, have been touted a little too highly.

"If there were truly a cure, there would be no bald dermatologists," he says.
